This year All Washed Up 2021 – Vermilion’s 3rd Annual Driftwood Art Contest—will add to the fun and beauty of the day by offering two valuable learning opportunities. It all happens Saturday, July 31, 10 am - 3 pm, in Exchange Park, at the corner of Liberty and Main in the heart of downtown Vermilion.

Folks who love driftwood also love its source, our Great Lake Erie. This year All Washed Up is proud to partner with Lake Erie Foundation (LEF), an event sponsor, to build awareness about plastic contamination and its impact on our lake, rivers, streams, and all life forms who depend on them. According to the LEF website, “The United Nations ranks plastic pollution as the second most dangerous threat to the global environment, only behind climate change.”

Lake Erie has the second highest level of plastic contamination among all the Great Lakes. Anyone who walks her beaches has witnessed the problem firsthand. How did all that plastic get into our lake? What is the impact on her and on us? What can those who love, live, work, play, and consume Lake Erie do to protect her health and our own? Though the problem can seem overwhelming, there are basic actions that will make a big impact.  Visit the LEF table at All Washed Up where members will be on hand to provide guidance and resources.

In addition, All Washed Up 2021 welcomes members of the Lorain County Woodcarvers who will be on hand with displays and demonstrations. The group’s mission is to promote and encourage wood carving throughout the county.  You may have seen the woodcarvers at the Lorain County Fair and the LaGrange Engine Show.  Their work includes sculpture in the round, chip carving, relief carving, woodturning, wood burning, painting, gourds, walking sticks and more.
Members range in age from teens to seniors and in skill from Beginner to Master Carver, so there is a place for everyone and new members are welcome. Stop by the Lorain County Woodcarvers table to learn about the group and the ancient art form they practice.

For complete event details, including a registration form to enter a driftwood creation in the contest, visit the All Washed Up website.   Mark your calendar for a day of summer fun on Saturday, July 31, 10 am – 3 pm, Exchange Park, Liberty and Main in downtown Vermilion.
