#BeYou44089: A Community Art Project

“Be Yourself [Everyone Else is Already Taken]” is a community public art project sponsored by Public Art Vermilion, a program of Main Street Vermilion. The project will kick off at the Community Easter Egg Hunt, this Saturday, April 1st, 3PM at Sherod Park.

Inspired by a famous quote from playwright, Oscar Wilde, participants are invited to create a simple, quick and fun thumbprint drawing of themselves. “The goal is to get more than 3,000 drawings,” said Public Art Vermilion Chairperson, Marilou Suszko. “No two drawings will be the same because they begin with your unique thumbprint,” she said. “It’s just a reminder that everyone is different and it’s good to be yourself.”

All ages are invited to participate that day and art supplies will be provided. The drawings will be created on small square piece of paper, collected and mounted on a large traveling format for future display around town.

Following the kick off, the project will continue at Main Street Vermilion. Stop in Monday thru Friday from 10AM-4PM and create your drawing to be included in the project. It only takes a minute.

“This art project will come together over time, maybe weeks or even months, before it will be released for public viewing,” said Suszko. “You can follow the progress on Main Street Vermilion’s Facebook page or Instagram.”

“If you would like to get your family, friends, neighbors, book club, business, service organization, classroom or any group to be part of this project, call Main Street at 440.963.0772 and let us know,” said Suszko. “We’ll provide all the materials with instructions on how to participate.”
