One Summer in Vermilion. Vol. 1, Issue 2

Hello! It’s Hayley, your favorite MSV intern, again! I’ve had an interesting second week. Here is an update on my current adventures:

  • I gardened with Vermilion in Bloom on Wednesday and Thursday. I met several people whose names popped up in the old files I was sorting through, such as Dana Corogin and Libby Williams (MSV secretary). I was responsible for planting flowers in the public parking lot across from MSV’s office and the planters near McGarvey’s Landing. I enjoyed planting as well as getting to know the participants. Prior to this internship I never gardened, so I was grateful to have patient teachers! Gardening is quite fun, especially in small groups!

  • I attended the Business Shower for Cupcake Cravings on Friday. Brenda, the owner, was very nice and excited to open her shop in Vermilion. I also tried one of her cupcakes and sugar cookies. Both were delicious, and her cookies are works of art! I highly recommend Cupcake Cravings if you want to quench your sweet tooth!

  • I went around to businesses and handed out flyers promoting our upcoming Mardi Gras event (storefront decoration contest), as well as picking up more Textedly subscribers. I particularly enjoyed my visit with Mary Stark, owner of The Pavilion Grill and Coal & Ice Station. I look forward to sampling the food at both places!

  • This might seem minor, but I began pulling staples out of new chair pads when I began working. Some came out easily, but some were super difficult. However, I was determined to pull them out, and they eventually gave up their hold. This is a small example of “you can do whatever you put your mind to!”

  • We also set out two large chalkboards around downtown. The prompts were “Draw your favorite flower” and “Draw your favorite cupcake.” We got a lot of feedback, which is awesome! Thank you to everyone who participated in chalkboard drawings; they were wonderful to see! They will appear again for Third Thursday, which is our music event. The Third Thursday for May is happening this week; the date is May 20 starting at 6:30 PM going until sunset. If you can, come out or bring your families! We would love to see you!

This week was chock full of new experiences. Some were easy and others were harder. However, I braved the challenges and am a more well-rounded person because of them.

Hayley Carter, MSV Intern

Note from the Director: “Without a doubt, Hayley rises to the many challenges that an intern faces. They are not all glamorous. The staples in the chairs that are being reupholstered might not seem like the best use of her time, but the reality is that at Main Street Vermilion, we all pitch in to get things done whether staff or volunteers. That’s the beauty of our MSV community within our community.”
