The 4th Annual Chalk it Up!
It’s another summer Saturday of colorful artwork on Main Street. Come downtown for a day of fun, creativity and some activities for the entire family. Artists start chalking their nautical-inspired artwork on Main Street adjacent to Victory Park at 10AM. As the day goes on you’ll see where their ideas take them.
Vote for your favorite creation by “buying” votes for $1. The winning artist receives a $100 gift certificate to Chez Francois, a generous supporter of Main Street Vermilion.
There are some kid and family-friendly activities as well that will let you show your creative side..
While you’re at Chalk it Up! save some time to visit the Vermilion Farmers Market in Victory Park and shop for fresh foods and other handcrafted, handmade products. Ritter Public Library will be there too with “Books and Beyond,” a program to encourage reading and more.
Be sure to walk to downtown Vermilion, just a few steps away for more shopping and places to enjoy lunch, dinner, a cocktail or a glass of wine.
It’s also the last day for the Vermilion Beach Market, a wonderful two-day event featuring vintage , salvage and handmade items and summer food. Not too far, it’s located at Sherod Park west of downtown and worth the short trip.
There’s a lot going on in Vermilion today…make a day of it! Everyone welcome.
Here’s a quick look at last year’s Chalk it Up! featuring storybook inspired art to commemorate the 100th anniversary of our Ritter Public Library.
Chalk it Up! 2018: A “Colorful” Success
It was the third year for this event and the largest and most colorful one yet. This year, Main Street Vermilion partnered with Ritter Public Library to celebrate their Centennial Anniversary. Thirty four generous volunteer artists gathered on Main Street mid-morning on July 22 and by noon the road and walk along Main Street begin filling up with bright chalk drawings, many depicting books and the love of reading as a salute to the library. There was Fancy Nancy, The Secret Garden, Watership Down and Time of Wonder and many more! Hundreds enjoyed family and kid-friendly interactive opportunities as well among the "middle-of-the-road" gallery.
Attendees voted for their favorite works of art and this year, the coveted People's Choice Award went to Yvonne Craigo and her family from Vermilion with their rendering of Pizza Hut's Book it Program, sponsored by Diana and Tony Szambecki for the Vermilion Arts Guild
At 3PM, the public was invited to Victory Park for a free, community-wide picnic to celebrate 100 years of Ritter Public Library. Everyone enjoyed hot dogs and hamburgers prepared by the Vermilion Lions Club and cupcakes from Vermilion's Small Town Sweets. A free concert in the park followed at 6PM starring Emily Keener, local talent and American Idol contestant.
Without a doubt, it was a wonderful day and evening for our community. We hope you'll join us again next year!
